Course Information

The purpose of this course is to give you background knowledge about Marshallese culture and history to help you communicate with your students better. You will also learn some simple strategies for alleviating stress in your students during conversations.

The assignments for the course require your participation in discussion questions with other Job Corps staff at various locations in the U. S. As you learn new information you will relate that information to your own experiences in working with your students. As we get to know one another online, we will build a learning community that works together to increase and use our new knowledge. Some guidelines for working online are needed.
The Guidelines for responding online are as follows:

  • Post at least 2 responses per question.
  • Make your responses substantial. Comment on your peers’ responses, give feedback, discuss your experiences and how they relate to the topic.
  • Be respectful of others’ opinions. Remember to think before you send a written response. Sometimes what you think is a joking comment can hurt someone’s feelings. Use humor sensitively.
  • If a response irritates you or makes you angry, wait at least 24 hours before you respond. Keep your responses relevant to the topic being discussed.
  • Use the canteen discussion area for non-course related questions or comments to others. Feel free to make extensive use of the canteen as you see fit.
  • E-mail your instructor with any questions or problems you are having with the course.
  • If this is your first time taking an online course you can learn more information on how to be a successful online learner by visiting the following link:
